Evaluating Needs and Connecting with Communities
Our first outing was a meeting held with Yelwa community members, a community in Karu LGA of Nasarawa state. During the meeting, challenges in the education sector affecting the community was one of the major issue dealt with and the needs assessment was completed. Similarly, DCYM visited the following communities (Kodayi community, Ado Maichibi community, Kuchidna community, Jigiphe community, Gurku Gwandara community, and (Kabusu community)) in Karu, Nasarawa state to conduct need assessment.
On completion of needs assessment, DCYM had gathered adequate data to able the organization to implement time-sensitive intervention towards filling the gaps within these community schools. Scholastic materials like books and pencils were shared in Yelwa, Jigiphe, Kodayi, Ado Maichibi, Kuchidna, and (Gurku Gwandara) LEA Primary schools.
DCYM’s Early Actions for Successful Classroom Building Initiatives
DCYM provided materials and the community volunteered labor for the renovation of a block of two (2) classrooms and a staff room in Kuchidna. About 13 school-aged children in Ado Maichibi LEA Primary school were enrolled in school. DCYM is currently working in collaboration with the Jigiphe community to mold blocks, which will later be used to build a block of four (4) classrooms. In the Kabusu community, the organization is currently renovating a block of four (4) classrooms and a staff room. Furthermore, blocks are already molded designed to build school convenience for students also in the Kabusu community.
